HOW WE WORK
All of our grooms include a pre-health check, ear cleaning, trimming of nails, hygiene, pad trim, brushing, and combing before we start styling. From bath to being ready to groom takes a minimum of 1 hour. Styling can take from 30 minutes up to 2 hours depending on the complexity of the groom.
Please be patient if you want fast and furious you are in the wrong salon.
Our staff is fully trained, we are fully insured and our salon only uses industry-approved products and equipment.
We use HOWND shampoos containing NO alcohol, parabens, soap, dyes, optical brighteners, or bleaches. They are Wheat Free, PH balanced, and vegan.
For De-shedding we often use a different range of shampoos, speak to our team if you would like further information regarding the ingredients in those shampoos.
All customers are required to be registered with us and agree to our T&Cs

PUPPY GROOM
From 12 weeks up to 6 months
You should be introducing your puppy to grooming from 12 – 14 weeks of age after their second set of vaccinations. Waiting until they’re older could mean that grooming becomes a stressful experience so early desensitisation is really important for your puppy. This should include even short-haired or smooth-coated puppies.

Our pricing is ESTIMATED PRICES ONLY additional costs will apply for parasites that are present, a heavily soiled coat, any difficult behavior, or if your dog has a matted coat. The final cost depends on the complexity of the groom, and how long it takes as each groom is different. House Of Hounds will charge for extra time and care that we need to give in order to groom dogs that are presented with knots, matting, overgrown coats, excessive undercoats, heavily soiled, behavioral issues, dogs size and weight any parasites present, and any specific needs.
Severely matted coats will have to be clipped short as dematting is a very lengthy PAINFUL and STRESSFUL process and it is not ethical to subject dogs to this.
Your groom appointments charges can differ from time to time depending on how long it has been since your last appointment. Regular appointments are essential for your dog’s welfare to ensure we can trim your dog’s nails to a comfortable length and to ensure a healthy knot/matt-free coat. Nail trimming and filing can only be done where the dog permits it some dogs can become aggressive or extremely stressed during nail clipping if this is the case we would recommend you visit your vet for this procedure to be done.

Our Salon Etiquette
All our grooms require that your dog has a pre-health check, bathed, dried, brushed, and combed before we start styling. From bath to being ready to groom takes a minimum of 1 hour. Styling can take from 30 minutes up to 2 hours depending on the complexity of the groom. Please be patient if you want fast and furious you are in the wrong salon.
We require a few things from you to ensure the grooming process is as smooth as possible and this starts at our reception! We would ask you kindly:
- If you ring the doorbell and we do not answer straight away, we promise we’re not ignoring you! Often we will need to secure a dog we are working on in order to answer the door safely.
- Please do not arrive early/late for your appointment. We work on a very close schedule and a lot of the time are unable to take your dog outside of their scheduled time. We try our best to be accommodating on this so please let us know if you feel you may be outside of your appointment time.
- If you do arrive at the salon and your dog is not quite finished, we ask that you keep out of sight so your dog does not see/hear you. Naturally, they will get very excited which can be unsafe if they are on the grooming table, and we may be unable to complete the groom.
- For safety reasons, we ask that you keep your dog on a lead at all times in the salon.
- Please do not bring your dog in for its groom if they have had diarrhea or been treated for fleas in the last 14 days.
- Super customers stick to a regular grooming schedule, either rebooking at the end of each appointment or booking 2/3 appointments ahead.
- Be prepared to pay higher prices if you do not stick to the recommended grooming schedule
- Be realistic, a knotty dog = more work = more expensive on a sliding scale of severity
- Customers who try to stretch out their grooming appointments to save money will be charged extra for the time it takes to work on the dog.
- Let us know of any changes to your dog’s lifestyle eg. household changes, vet visits, injuries, or anything that may lead them to be out of sorts. Changes do affect dogs, are not mind readers so please tell us.
- Remember no-shows will always be charged 100% of the estimated grooming fee and an upfront deposit will be required for any future bookings.
- No-Show or late cancellation three times and you will need to find another groomer. No Exceptions.
- If you do need to cancel please give us as much notice as possible in 48 business hours to avoid the late cancellation fee.
- You do not have permission to take photos of other dogs or our staff in the salon or shoot away with your own dog after the groom.
- It is your responsibility to upkeep your dog’s coat while brushing their dogs at home with tools appropriate to their breed. We are happy to advise you on how often and how to brush your dog, just ask us.
We do not offer our services to dogs that bite or have major behavioral issues.
GROOMING SCHEDULE GUIDE
3 – 6 WEEKS
These breeds should be professionally groomed every 3 -6 weeks, and thoroughly brushed daily at home.
Breed Examples:
Poodles, All Poodle crosses, Bichon Frise, Bedlington Terrier, Maltese Terrier, Shih Tzu (Full Coat) Lhasa Apso (Full Coat), and Havanese Bolognese
6 -8 WEEKS
These breeds should be professionally groomed every 6-8 weeks, at home they should be brushed at least every 3-4 times per week.
Breed Examples:
Shih Tzu (Pet Trim), Lhasa Apso (Pet Trim), Miniature Schnauzer, Pekingese, Tibetan Terrier, Yorkshire Terrier, Soft Coated Wheaten, and Pomeranians
8 – 12 WEEKS
These breeds should be professionally groomed every 8-12 weeks, at home they should be brushed at least once a week.
Breed Examples:
West Highland Terrier, Cavalier King Charles, Kerry Blue Terrier, Airedale Terrier, Cocker Spaniel, Springer Spaniel
Rough Collie, Husky, Malamute and Setters
MATTED DOGS AFTERCARE & ADVICE
SHAVEDOWN AFTERCARE & ADVICE
Our aftercare and advice are to provide helpful information for when you take your dog home after a shave down.
- Upon collecting your dog, it is important that you don’t laugh/ridicule your dog or speak in a sorrowful tone to your dog as they will pick up on your emotions.
- Your dog may behave differently, such as licking excessively, rubbing around, dragging its bottom, and scratching. This should go away in time. Do not let them rub themselves on furniture or carpet as this may cause irritation to the skin. Your dog’s skin airflow was restricted or pulled tight due to the matting and now that it is released your dog may feel a pins and needles sensation on their skin. This sensation can make your dog want to scratch itself, this can cause self-harm as but not limited to bruising and ripping their skin. We advise that you supervise your dog closely over the next 24 hours.
- Usually, we do not trim a dog’s nails when they have been shaved to help prevent injury to your dog’s skin from any nails being sharp. We will advise if we have filed your dog’s nails if we have felt it necessary. You can return at a later date to have your dog’s nails trimmed.
- Do not apply any flea/ tick treatment for 7 days after your dog has been shaved. This gives your dog’s skin the opportunity to cool and replenish the natural oils in the coat.
- If your dog’s skin does become irritated use an approved first aid product for dogs such as a topical calming spray like Leucillin, or Aloe Vera, which can help ease any soreness or irritation following a shave down. Please consult with your vet for advice.
- Removing mats from dogs’ ears comes with the risk of a hematoma forming. The dog’s ears are initially heavy and weighed down with long thick matted clumps of hair. In some cases, blood flow is restricted. When mats are removed their ears suddenly feel light and airy. Dogs often then shake their head, which causes the soft ear leather to knock against the dog’s head. Blood flow also increases to the ends of the ears and can make the ear feel thick, sometimes the skin on the ear starts to bleed. We recommend you use stockings/socks/bandages at home for your dog’s head.
- Your dog’s skin is exposed to the elements and has no protection so please use sun factor (for dogs) during sunny spells and during cold spells please use a suitable jacket/jumper.
- Your dog is treated by our staff with the utmost care and caution. As per our T&Cs, Our staff will not be responsible for minor nicks, and or clipper burns resulting from grooming of matted/pelted neglected coats. This includes any irritations caused or exposure to any underlying skin issues due to matting.
SOME REASONS WHY YOUR DOG GETS MATTED
- It could be that you are not brushing and combing out your dog’s coat correctly or you are not using the correct equipment. Just brushing the top of your dog’s coat won’t prevent matting. House Of Hounds has a range of grooming products that are for sale in the salon. We are happy to advise the best product for your dog’s coat. We are also quite happy to show you how to brush your dog and demonstrate effective line brushing..
- It may be that you have left it too long between getting your dog groomed professionally. The longer your dog’s coat is, the more frequently you will need to visit us. Ask our staff for advice regarding the best grooming schedule for your dog.
- When your dog reaches 7 months old their coat can change from the soft fine puppy coat to a thicker coarse coat. During this change, your dog’s coat will matt up very quickly and you will need to brush your dog daily to help prevent matting.
- Cleaner coats are more manageable. Oil, dirt, and dead skin & hair build up in the coat causing it to join together to form clumps or mats so consider washing your dog more regularly but do remember to brush and dry your dog correctly. Ask our House Of Hounds, team, for advice on bathing your dog.
- If your dog has allergies or fleas the dog will scratch & chew its coat-forming mats as saliva acts like glue in a dog’s coat.
- If your dog is around other dogs that play by mouthing each other, usually around each other’s necks, the saliva can help form mats in the dog’s coat or the dog breaking & damaging the hair.
- Matts will start where there is movement. Matts start behind the ears, in the armpits, and around the tail. Also on areas where there is friction due to harnesses or clothing accessories So pay particular attention to those areas when brushing your dog.
- Unfortunately, some cross-breed dogs’ coats are very difficult to manage. For example, some doodle dogs have very bad combination coats that matt up very quickly. They can have 3 different hair types within the coat and can be high maintenance in terms of coat management.
